Troubleshooting Common Issues in Laser Welding

Common welding defects and solutions?

1. Inconsistent Welding or Intermittent Laser Output

Symptoms:
The laser welding process starts and stops irregularly, leading to incomplete welds or poor seam quality.

Possible Causes:

Fiber Optic Issues: A damaged or poorly connected fiber optic cable can reduce laser transmission efficiency.

Laser Source Instability: Power fluctuations or internal faults in the laser generator can lead to inconsistent output.

Electrical System Problems: Loose wiring or unstable power supply may cause interruptions.

Solution:

Inspect and clean all fiber optic connections.

Ensure the laser source is operating within stable parameters.

Check the electrical system for loose cables or voltage irregularities.

2. Porosity or Cracks in the Weld

Symptoms:
Small holes (pores) or visible cracks appear in the weld seam, which can weaken the joint.

Possible Causes:

Insufficient Shielding Gas: Inadequate or improperly directed shielding gas allows air to contaminate the molten pool.

Surface Contamination: Oil, rust, or moisture on the base material can introduce impurities during welding.

Incorrect Welding Parameters: Excessive speed or power may cause metal instability or overheating.

Solution:

Verify the gas type (e.g., argon or nitrogen) and ensure correct flow and nozzle direction.

Clean the material thoroughly before welding.

Optimize laser parameters for the material type and thickness.

3. Weld Discoloration or Blackened Seam

Symptoms:
The weld surface appears dark, discolored, or oxidized, which can indicate poor protection and affect appearance or performance.

Possible Causes:

Low Gas Flow Rate: Not enough shielding gas leads to oxidation.

Gas Contamination: Dirty or impure gas introduces particles or moisture into the weld area.

Poor Gas Coverage: Misaligned nozzles or blocked paths may not cover the weld zone adequately.

Solution:

Increase and monitor the gas flow rate.

Use high-purity shielding gas and regularly maintain the supply system.

Adjust the gas nozzle angle and check for obstructions.

Summary

By proactively identifying and solving these issues, users can greatly improve weld quality and production reliability. Regular maintenance, proper parameter setting, and clean operating conditions are key to ensuring a smooth laser welding process.
