One of the key advantages of fiber laser cutting machines is their ability to concentrate high-energy-density beams into extremely small focal spots, enabling precise and narrow cuts. In the past, laser cutting relied on manual focus adjustment, but with advancements in laser technology, automatic focusing has become the standard-especially in high-power laser cutting systems.

At first glance, adjusting the focus might seem as simple as changing the height of the laser head. Some might assume that raising the cutting head would shift the focal point upward, while lowering it would bring the focus down. However, this approach is impractical for several reasons.

First, the nozzle at the bottom of the laser head maintains a constant distance (typically 0.5–1.5 mm) from the workpiece during cutting. Since the nozzle height remains fixed, simply moving the laser head up or down does not alter the focal position.

Second, the focal length of the focusing lens is fixed, meaning the focus cannot be adjusted by altering the lens's inherent properties. However, by moving the lens itself, the focal point can be shifted-lowering the lens brings the focus down, while raising it moves the focus upward. This principle is the basis for one common automatic focusing method: using a motor-driven mechanism to adjust the lens position dynamically.

An alternative approach involves placing a variable-curvature mirror (or tunable mirror) in the beam path before it reaches the focusing lens. By adjusting the mirror's curvature, the beam's divergence angle changes, allowing control over the focal position without physically moving the lens.

Automatic focusing significantly enhances processing efficiency, particularly when cutting different materials or varying thicknesses. The system can instantly optimize the focal position, reducing piercing time for thick plates and improving overall cutting speed and precision. For modern high-speed sheet metal laser cutting machines, automatic focusing is not just a convenience-it is an essential feature that ensures consistent, high-quality results.

As laser technology continues to evolve, further innovations in focus control will likely emerge, pushing the boundaries of speed, accuracy, and versatility in industrial laser cutting applications. If you want to know more information, please contact us rayther@raytherlasercutter.com
